A Melbourne restaurant has become Australia’s first official, completely gluten-free eatery.
Delhicious Indian and Modern Cuisine in Ivanhoe got Coeliac Australia accreditation on Monday, which means people with coeliac disease are able to dine there without fear of cross-contamination or illness.
While gluten-free options were available at many restaurants, meals were still likely to be contaminated by gluten, Coeliac Australia said.
“Eating out is one of the biggest challenges faced by people with coeliac disease today,” Coeliac Australia president Michael Bell said.
“With Coeliac Australia accreditation, gluten-free consumers know that a business follows best practice for gluten-free food preparation.”
One in 70 Australians has coeliac disease but more than 80 per cent of cases go undiagnosed.
People who have coeliac disease or an intolerance to gluten — found in wheat, barley, rye and oats — have to drastically change their diet to avoid symptoms.
